Tunisia/ 4. Current issues in cultural policy development and debate

4.2.1 Conceptual issues of policies for the arts

The democratic transition process contributed to an open debate on the issues of cultural rights and freedom of cultural expression, especially after growing assaults on artists, art galleries, festivals and even on seminars that promoted cultural freedoms and freedom of expression[1]. Consecutively, it led to the emergence of initiatives by the Tunisian civil society dedicated to cultural freedom, and aimed to strengthen the capacity of civil society to promote the values of diversity of cultural expressions and peaceful co-existence through mutual respect.
